The cheque for $180,000 will form part of a $650,000 donation from the COA for the project, which is due for completion mid-year.

In December the group presented $320,000 to ISLHD and will present the final donation of $150,000 once the centre is complete said COA president Peter Still.

“A further donation coming end of March or early April when the facility opens,” Peter said.

The huge donation comes following eight years of fundraising, lobbying and hardwork from the COA team.

“I think it is probably one of the most exciting events since the opening of the cancer house,” Peter said.

“The community and the COA have been able to achieve such a wonderful success for palliative care in this area.

“The moneywill be going towards the internal fit out of the palliative care unit and some of the bricks and mortar of the construction. It is quite spread out.”

The funds from the COA haveallowed the unit to expand from two palliative care rooms to include two family rooms. Meaning the patients will be able have their loved ones stay near as they approach the end of life.

“It will be a great thing that we can stand back and have a look at this wonderful facility,” Peter said.

“We will be able to offer this facilityto the community and to the hospital.Hopefully shoring up the existence of our hospital.”

The palliative care unit will allow residents of the area to remain close to their friends, family and home while in care. Previously, patients would need to travel to Berry or further north to receive end of life care.
