Tasmanian teacher Stuart Gifford has been on board the ship for the past six weeks, developing a range of educational programs for classrooms and hosting live web sessions from the vessel.

“It’s a pilot program brought out by the CSIRO and the Marine National Facility …and basically what I’m doing is bringing back science at sea into the classroom ,” Mr Gifford said.

“It’s been great, thekids love it and are very engaged, they ask great questions.

“It’s great publicity for the vessel to be able to do this and also it’s good fun for me because Iget to walk around with an iPad andtalk to the scientistsabout what they’re doing.”

Mr Gifford said the response from schools so far hadbeen nothing but positive.

The program offers an opportunity to inspire the next generations about science, technology, engineering and maths bypractically demonstrating the real-world applications.

“It is priceless, you can’t really put a figure on what it’s worth to be able to use the resources of the CSIRO and MNF to provide this kind of experience, what it does for the science, technology, engineering and maths sector in schools is vital because it’s real world stuff,” Mr Gifford said.

“I’ve got my wet weather gear on and I’m out on the deck collecting, helping bring the equipment back on fromover the side, deploying it, launching it, I’m in the science labs sampling the data, looking at the sediments and all those things,” he said.
