Judges said the project was a model for delivery of housing mix within an urban renewal site.

In 2016, Washington Park was named Best Masterplanned Community Development in the Urban Taskforce Development Awards, adding to previous honours from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (NSW).

Washington Park is a public-private partnership between property development and investment companyPayce and the state government’sLand and Housing Corporation.

It is the first stage of a proposed redevelopment of the huge estate, which housed a US military hospital during World War 11 and then became the Herne Bay housing settlement and, later, more modern social housing.

Washington Park includes 150 social apartments, 675 private apartments, community centre, public libraryand threeshops.

It is estimated development of the remainder of the estate, north of Riverwood station, will provide another 1600 new social and affordable homes and more than 3500 homes for private buyers.

Ms Turnbull said the awards “celebrate innovative, bold city making projects”.
